the studio

Jean-Philippe Richard is wholly committed to his one and only studio in Mirabel-aux-Baronnies (department of Drôme in Provence, France), a space that is open and dedicated to spontaneous encounters and friends just passing by. The artist has never managed to work elsewhere.

The studio, which is rather small for a sculptor, is located in a traditional village house, on an upper floor, capped by a dome-shaped skylight, thus enabling the precision work that his sculpting requires.
The part of the studio situated downstairs is dedicated bronze work, where he is assisted by Eric Ortiz, who he trained.

The workshop is, of course, full of previously created clay models, sketches, raw clay bricks, crystal blocks and also the main kiln (which is assembled then dismantled after each firing) and some test kilns: everything linked together in a maze of electrical connections. At the heart of all this stands the sculptor, surrounded with metal structures and an overhead crane in order to lift his pieces aloft.
